Hi, I’m Abbie! I’m a slightly petite, 5 year old, love bug of a Boykin. A lady does tell tales, and much of my prior life is unknown, but I do know I would love to wiggle myself into your pack!
I enjoy playing with the other two girl Boykins here at my foster home. The younger Boykin and I are best friends and we love to play together. In between play sessions I chill out or chew on an antler. I have been left with the other dogs in the house for up to 6 hours with no issues. I am so happy when my people come home that I have to pick up a toy and parade it around while wiggling my whole body. I am sad when people leave and sometimes whine or howl for a minute or two but then all is well. As you might imagine, I love attention and like to snuggle with my foster dad on the love seat.
I have a strong prey drive and love to chase lizards, birds and squirrels. I don’t really like to stay outside for too long, though. I enjoy lying around the house and napping also. I love, love, love to swim but I bite at the water while swimming around and swallow a lot. The only time I have had an accident while at my foster home was when I drank too much water while swimming and my foster dad didn’t see I needed to go out. Otherwise, I am housebroken and will either go to the door or come up to you and whine to tell you I need to go outside.
The commands I know are sit, leave it, drop it and kennel. I sleep peacefully in my kennel at night but if you want to invite me to sleep with you, I’m sure I would like that. I have learned to sit and wait until released to eat my food but I sometimes try to jump the gun. I am an excellent car companion. Storms and loud noises don’t bother me. I still need work on my leash manners. I am a strong little dog and like to pull and sniff everything. I am working on my stay command and trying to understand down.
I was nervous when I arrived here and it has taken me a while to settle in and learn that everything is ok. I bark at strange noises and am a little fearful of strangers coming into the house. Once they give me treats I decide they can stay but it takes a few times for me to get to know someone and decide that they can pet me. I will bark at strange dogs when out walking.
At 31 pounds I am solidly built, and I do need to watch my weight. I will beg at the table so I need someone who will keep my best interests in mind and not give me scraps, despite my beautiful Boykin eyes telling you different! I have learned to like fruit and veggie snacks. I will need brushing and maintenance to keep my coat in shape. I really don’t like my feet to be touched or my nails trimmed but I am working on getting better.
The best home for me is where I have humans who will continue to work with me on my training, my manners and who will give me lots of opportunity to exercise, play and hopefully swim too. Because of my fear of new people and dogs, I need someone with the experience and ability to help me learn how to behave properly. I would be better in a house with either no children or older children who can read my signals. With my high prey drive, it is best that my forever home has no cats or small animals. I need a fenced yard since I will take off when I get a scent. Be careful opening a door around me. I will zip out. But most of all, I would really love to have another dog sibling to play with me and people to love on.
