Dear Friends~

As I sit down to write to you, I am, yet again, amazed at how quickly time has passed and that we are approaching the close of another year. And, what a year it has been! In 2021, Boykin Spaniel Rescue turned the corner on a new decade of service to at-risk Boykin spaniels celebrating our 20th year. That’s 20 years of BSR, with the support of the Boykin community, rehabilitating at-risk Boykin Spaniels and giving them a second chance at the lives they deserve ~ to be exact 1350 of them by the end of October! And, since the inception of BSR’s Julia Horner Permanent Foster Care program in 2010, another 89 at-risk Boykins found comfort and care as PFC’s. That is 1,439 at-risk Boykins that have been rescued, rehabilitated, and have found their way to better lives and we can’t thank you all enough!

2021 was another whirlwind year for dog intakes with 70 as of October 31, and the saying “the more things change, the more they stay the same” held true for us in many ways. What stayed the same are conditions that have become common to rescue that we expect to see year in and year out:
  • 15 heartworms cases (roughly 1/4 of our intakes each year);
  • 27 dogs needing a spay or neuter (50% annually on average);
  • a steady flow of dogs with skin and coat issues, orthopedic problems/conditions, vision loss, and other physical ailments;
  • Dogs that simply need a new start in a new home with families that have the time to dedicate to the dogs’ needs and that have few if any health problems; and
  • the continued trend of rising veterinary costs in general.

And, what has changed? Leading the list is the continued trend in the uptick of catastrophic cases where the dogs are sicker and the issues more chronic which increases the need to work with specialists; and the spiraling cost of diagnostics often required to determine the cause of their illness/conditions which are often orthopedic and neurological in nature. To date we have had the following:
  • 4 dogs requiring MRI’s with an average cost of $4000 per MRI; (testing showed one of these dogs was missing most of the left hemisphere of her brain, another is paralyzed);
  • 11 dogs requiring surgeries (tumor/mass/growth removals, eye surgeries, lumpectomies, heart surgery); and
  • 11 dogs requiring dental extractions;
  • In addition, not only has there been a steady increase in the cost of heartworm treatment, heartworms in some areas of the country have become resistant to preventative and the time to clear a dog of the worms is in many cases longer than we have previously seen. That amounts to a month (or several months) in care longer that normal before adoptability. And, that equates to higher costs.
However, as our Anniversary Year comes to a close, "All is Bright" with BSR and I am thrilled to announce that BSR has established an endowment fund. We have set this fund up to ensure that BSR will be here in the future. You will find, in addition to the donation reply card enclosed, a reply card if you would like more information on the endowment.

I am forever grateful to my team as well as the over 640 volunteers throughout the year who have made our work possible. I am also forever indebted to you, our donors, who believe in us. We have had many days that your support pushed us forward. Rescue is hard work. It can be heartbreaking. But, it can bring out the best in all of us.

Please consider a tax-deductible donation to Boykin Spaniel Rescue as you consider your year-end giving. Your donation goes directly to the care of our dogs in the upcoming year. Our goal for this campaign is $100,000. We sincerely appreciate your love and care of our dogs and your support over the past 20 years that has helped those 1,439 at risk Boykins find their way to better lives.

On behalf of the Boykin Spaniel Rescue Board of Directors, I wish you Peace, Health and Happiness in the New Year.

Sincerely,
Jill Freeman
President
