BIO: My name is Dixie and I am 3yr old female Boykin looking for my forever home. I am a healthy girl, weighing 52 pounds. I am initially very shy but once I get to know you, I am very affectionate and want to be with you all the time. I am a true water dog and have lots of Boykin “birdy” instincts. Playful and full of energy, I am ready to be an all around great dog for my forever humans.
I might be shy at first, but my foster parents say I am sweet, curious and precocious. I LOVE the water and am great at diving for my toys all the way to the bottom of the pool. My foster dad is an old bird hunter and says I would be a gem dandy water retriever. But he says, I can never be an outside kennel dog because I need to be with my family most of the time and don’t like being outside by myself. I love being in the house! I like my toys, playing tug of war and in general don’t chew anything I shouldn’t except my tennis balls! I am still learning what it means to actually retrieve and bring the ball or toy back to you! But with some time and patience I know I can learn. I get along well with other dogs and have learned the routine, the rules of the house and how to use the doggie door from my foster canines, although they are more mature and don’t really want to play with me. But I want to play with them!
My perfect forever home would be with humans who had a lot of time, patience and commitment to give me the love, attention and training that I need. Of course, I am a work in progress. I need some training on my commands, especially the “come” command; learning to walk nicely on a leash and how to manage my excitement when you come home so that I don’t jump all over you in my joy. My inside manners are pretty good; I am housebroken and don’t destroy anything. I stay calmly in the kitchen with the other dogs when my foster parents are out. I am learning it is not appropriate to counter-surf.
I am spayed and healthy. Because I do like to swim and dive, my perfect family has to be willing to take very good care of my ears to prevent yeast infections.
A fenced yard and most of all, access to water would be so great since I live to swim! People who are home a lot are real important for me. And did I mention I would love a dog who will play with me? I haven’t been around children much or cats either. I think older children who are respectful of dogs would be fine. I need people who will understand my shyness and let me warm up to them on my own terms. I promise that won’t take long and I will be sleeping in your bed with you if you will let me.
September 2019 Update!
Hello Friends at BSR ! Press and Susie Beattie appreciate all the work you did to bring Dixie into our family. Dixie has a FULL life living and playing on five acres of wetland and loves the outdoors. We live on Black Creek in Hartsville, SC . Dixie's favorite thing to do is to run to the creek and jump in, paddle around awhile and rest beside the fishing pond in the shade. Dixie is very in tune with our routine which includes yard work, fishing , and hanging out on the property. Dixie sniffs the same areas every day when I walk her on the leash. She loves to chase birds but never catches them.
Dixie is friendly with people and children. She loves our four grandchildren and watches them fish. She is good at letting us know when people come down our road by barking. Dixie loves to sit in the den and living room on TOP of the back of the sofas. Dixie spent time with a professional trainer after we adopted her and has done well following basic commands. However, she LOVES to counter surf in the kitchen and our little gates have not worked very well , Smart dog ! Our LBD is a well loved part of our family with a loving personality, gentle ways, and a keen understanding of what we ask of her. She is adored by us and our extended family.
