Meet Jake, a happy, healthy, active adolescent Boykin. Full of energy and eagerness, Jake is 18 months old and 30 pounds with a lovely wavy coat and a cute top knot to boot! Heartworm positive when he came into rescue he is now completely free of heart worms and has a clean bill of health and ready to make some family very happy for a long time.
Jake is eager to please and very trainable. He already knows sit, “go to your kennel” and is learning to walk nicely on a leash. He currently runs daily with his foster mom to help burn off some of his normal young dog energy. He is learning to retrieve and loves, loves, loves to swim. He is very active, playing all day with his foster canines and then cuddling with his humans in the evening.
He still needs a special feeding bowl to slow down his eating. Sometimes when pups don’t get enough food to eat for a time they become fast eaters. And very loud noises close by are un-nerving to him. He treats cats as prey, so best that he find a cat-free home. But he loves children; older would be best since he still has so much puppy energy he could knock over a toddler.
Jake needs a home where his humans are committed to working with him on obedience training and retrieving so that he can reach his full Boykin potential. A very active family would be best; one that would take him running, hiking, swimming and all the things that Boykins love to do. Also playing! A home near the water would be wonderful. Other dogs would be grand too, especially if they are young enough to want to play with Jake. If you are looking for a young dog to be your companion and one that you can have a real impact on molding into a super dog, then take a good look at Jake.
September 2019 Update
BSR alum 1004 Jake has been with his family for 2 years now. He was slowed down several months ago by a painful bulging disc, but has bounced back and is thriving. Except for a few scars, all his bald patches have filled in nicely. Whether we're away 2 minutes or a week, he still shows joy and anxiety when we return (he can make us feel guilty for going to the grocery store!).
Jake loves truck rides, chair naps with his favorite ball and watching people and critters. A staring contest with the neighbor's cat is still top entertainment. He takes inventory of his toys and panics when something is missing. We can't imagine life without this sweet, funny, slightly neurotic boy. Thanks, BSR! Al and Kathy English
