Dear Friends,
It is hard to believe we are almost halfway through 2025. The months fly by, and the dogs keep coming in. We continue to see so many dogs, both from families who can no longer care for them and those that need catastrophic care. Every year we see the cost of dog care continue to rise exponentially, and this year is no exception. So, today I am writing to ask you to consider a donation to Boykin Spaniel Rescue. Our goal for this campaign is $100,000.00.
As of this writing (May 30th), we have taken in 39 dogs and again this year project over 100 intakes. The number of intakes can change quickly with intakes of litters of puppies (as occurred 3 times in 2024!); intakes of multiples of dogs from one source; or a general uptick in the number of dogs we intake per month (12 dogs in May). Additionally, so far this year, we have had 8 catastrophic cases. Below are a few of their stories:
Mr. T: 12-year-old "Mr. T" came into care in an extremely poor state of health after years of deferred vet care and outdoor living. He had extensive hair loss and skin infections; and where he had hair, it was heavily matted. He also had active ear infections that left drainage oozing from one of his ears. Given his condition, he was transported straight to a vet for medical care and boarding. Miraculously, he was heartworm negative, and his ear infection cleared over the 2-week span he was in veterinary care. Under sedation for a neuter, Mr. T’s teeth were fully examined and when the extent of his dental issues became apparent, the veterinarian ended up removing 23 teeth that were broken, cracked, or where pockets of infection were festering at the root level. Mr. T is now in permanent foster care and will now know a life of soft beds, good food, and a loving foster mom to see him through his golden years!
Boone: An 8-week-old puppy taken in due to a congenital malformation of one of its forearms. Due to differing growth rates of the two forearm bones, both bones developed wrists and digits that did not properly align, leaving him with a non-functional limb with the appearance of having two paws. After extensive research by BSR’s orthopedic veterinary advisor, Boone had surgery which essentially combined both forearm bones at the lowest possible point to create a “super limb” and the extra digits were removed to give him one paw. Boone is doing great!
We thank you for your steadfast support helping us meet the challenges ahead and care for the most vulnerable Boykins like Mr. T and Boone. We realize that 2025 has been challenging for so many members of the Boykin community, and we appreciate your consideration.
With gratitude,
Jill
