Bella came into BSR's care as a sweet, energetic 8 year old, with a lot of life left in her! Her favorite things to do are to fetch, swim and take walks. She did have a love of hunting, although her skills were a little rusty. She needed a home with the right person...one who would share her love of field work along with a lap to snuggle in at night!
January 2020 update:
I applied for Bella August 2016 after being approved by BSR for a couple of years. I wanted a dog that matched my age. I had just retired and was hoping for a dog with some hunting background. I had my telephone interview with Rita who was Bella's foster. I think I made a life-long friend! I had waited until I retired to look for a boykin companion to hunt with, and here she was! We moved into our new home on November the 10th and took off to get Bella on the 14th. We made the 1022 mile trip and were so glad we did..we saw lot of places we had only heard of, our only regret was being in a hurry to get back and get settled in new house, we did little site seeing other than out the car window on interstate 10!
But with Bella, it was love at first sight. Bella loves everyone she meets. We had Bella for almost a year before she ever barked, then all of a sudden she started barking whenever someone rang doorbell or knocked on door. Now that she has lost most of her hearing, and so that habit has slowed down unless she sees them approaching front door. Bella ignores all other dogs on walks or while hunting; other dogs run up and start sniffing or barking and she pays no attention with one exception...Yorkies! She will drag me across street to greet all Yorkies but as soon as she gets a sniff she then is satisfied that’s not the one she is looking for.
Bella loves all small children 2-5 years of age and she wants to sniff them also as if she is looking for someone. When Bella first came home she went everywhere I went for first year or so now she prefers to stat home unless I dress in camo. Once she sees me in camo clothing she is out the door waiting at the truck. She still wants to retrieve everyone's dove no matter how far away! The joke in the dove club is Mike can shoot 2 times and take home a limit. And Bella really excels at snipe hunting retrieving birds in brush 6 foot tall and coming out with the bird!
As Bella ages she has developed new tricks such as guarding the ice box. And barking at her food bowl. Due to age and mobility this was probably last hunting season but I hope to have many more years as best lapdog ever!
Thank you Rita,Skip and BSR for letting this happen, Mike and Bella Stovall
