Bio: Hi! I am Teddy. I am 4 yrs old, weigh 50 lbs and have a wavy coat, and I have a little bit of white on my chest. And guess what….I have an amazing “gift” that most Boykins do not…I have a gloriously fringed full tail! My foster mom says I am inquisitive and smart, and while I may not look like other Boykins with tiny nubs, she says my tail adds even more character than I already have!!
I am endearing in many ways...I love being around people and other dogs too, and I am sweet and affectionate. You can tell I love people because my tail wags whenever I hear a human speaking (and remember…you can really see it wagging!!). My foster mom says I am a great companion dog to her and her pup. I love having another dog around. I don’t try to dominate them and I just want to be included on all adventures like walks, affection, snacks and treats, etc. I love being petted and will follow you everywhere.
When I came to Boykin Spaniel Rescue I was heartworm positive. Going through the treatments was tough, I’ll tell you honestly, but I have a clean bill of health now and feel so much better. A big part of the heartworm treatment is keeping quiet and not being active. That was hard and now that I am well again, I am so excited to go outside! I love greeting other dogs. I haven’t been around cats. When I met children out on walks I am pretty indifferent to them, but honestly haven’t spent much time with them. Since my treatments I have also I discovered that I really like swimming! Right now I am swimming with a doggie life vest as I build up my strength.
I need to work on my leash manners. When I am out walking and I see another dog or animal, I pull and bark. My foster mom is working with me to stay calm and not pull. Now that I am able to be active again we are going on walks and working on basic commands, especially coming when my name is called. I am ok with the crate. When my foster mom goes out I chill out with my doggie foster pal. I am not sure how I would react to being left with no one to keep me company. When I was on medication for the heartworms, I did have 3 incidents of marking, especially after my foster mom had company who was male. So it is probably best get a refresher course in housebreaking, or maybe I am just a ladies man and want my mom all to myself!!
The ideal home for me would be with people who will love me and be committed to working with me on my leash walking, commands and coming. Hopefully they will have patience too. Lots of good exercise is a must with walks and access to water for swimming would be an added bonus. I need to have another dog who is not domineering, and plenty of room to roam and explore the great outdoors.
2022 Update:
Teddy was so excited to get his card in the mail today! He is the best dog and has had the best year with our family! He loves to go on walks, run around in the yard with his human sisters, and relax in his bed :) He especially loved the peanut butter pup cup from Pelican’s Snowballs for his June birthday treat! A few pictures are attached!
