BSR Alums "Dixie" and "Maggie" by Peggy & Richard Vitolo
Maggie May 2018 Update
Maggie came to her new home with bunches of issues, including heart worms, allergies and fear aggression. The heart worms are long gone, although she still struggles some with environmental allergies. Her fear aggression is tons better, although it may never disappear completely. She always respected her older Boykin, Miss Dix, and has learned to live for short periods of time, with One Eyed Jack since her humans and his humans take turns pet sitting for one another. Maggie loves to swim and retrieve, so living on a lake is a dream come true for her. She has even taken up paddle boarding. She gets plenty of walks, swims most days in the spring, summer and fall and loves her bones and toys. She is always ready for a good belly rub.
Dixie May 2018 Update
In the 3 years since coming to her new digs, Dixie or Miss Dix as she is affectionately called, has settled in and is truly the Queen Bee. Her friendly temperament means that she makes friends quickly with new humans and dogs (even cats); after a few barks of course. She enjoys living on a lake as long as you don’t ask her to get wet! Although she is a good swimmer, she prefers to stay high and dry and watch her Boykin sister do all the water retrieving. She likes a good boat ride, especially in the front in the 2 seater kayak and her early morning walks around her hilly neighborhood, full of deer, turkeys, rabbits, foxes and the occasional bear. She has learned to walk off-leash and enjoys the freedom to run, smell and explore. Most of all she likes her naps and meal time. She is a true joy in every sense of the word.
Maggie August 2019 Update!
Maggie has been in her forever home for 3 years now and is thriving. Heart worm positive and with severe allergies when she was rescued, she is now healthy, and loving her diet of freeze dried lamb supplemented with blueberries, pumpkin, coconut oil and apple. No more allergy shots! Maggie had some pretty aggressive behavior when she came to BSR. But with 3 years of consistent counter-conditioning she has come along way. She accepts her neighbor, BSR Alum Captain Jack, as part of the family and she loves her older sister, BSR Alum, Miss Dixie. Originally a Florida dog, Maggie loves living in the NC foothills and exploring mountain streams, wooded trails and of course, swimming everyday possible in Lake James where she lives.
