BSR Alum "J.J." by Barry Ward
J.J. aka "Jessie J" was a dream come true for me. We've only had JJ for 3 months, but I had been wanting a Boykin for a long time to train for hunting and as a spoiled rotten pet. J.J. has settled into his new home without a hitch. It took his older sisters, Dixie and Katie a while to adjust to a rambunctious young whipper snapper, but they came around...mostly anyway. Dixie has learned to tolerate him. Katie it a bit more accommodating to his antics. J.J. has truckloads of personality. He has even conned his way into being allowed on the couch...something that none of our other dogs have ever been allowed to do.
As for hunting, JJ is coming along fine. We try to train at least a little every day. He LOVES going after bumpers, has learned to respond to whistle commands, sit and stay, and follow a few basic hand signals. He also has a natural love for water. On our woodland walks by the river, he will check out every access to water...and jump in if given half a chance! He shows no fear of gunshots, as one of our neighbors often target practices nearby. I am hoping all our training will prepare us for dove season this September.
As for my wife, she was somewhat hesitant to agree to a dog with longer hair, but JJ has sufficiently "wooed" her that she will never again balk at a Boykin. Her only criticism is JJ makes it abundantly clear that he is MY dog (or is that I am HIS human?). I get a review of all the Boykins on the rescue site from my wife every week...so, yeah, I'm betting our next dog will be a Boykin also!
