Luca's Story

Our Boy Luca

Luca's Bio:  Hey, y’all!  My name is Luca.  I’m a gorgeous, 40-lb boy 2 year old Boykin. I have a beautiful, smooth coat with orange highlights on my ears and on my hind leg feathering.  My foster parents called me “lover boy.” I will literally jump in your lap and cuddle like a baby upon greeting you.

Because of my prior life, there are many things you take for granted that I have not been exposed to and every day is a new learning experience for me. Life is unfolding before my eyes and I have a lot of catching up to do. Most of all I love getting love and attention and am so happy to be included in whatever you are doing. And I love being with other dogs and enjoy a good game of tug-of-war or chase me! I also love taking morning walks with the pack! I am crate trained but prefer to lay down on the cool tile or hardwood floors. I get along great with older, respectful children.  I sit nicely for treats, but tend to jump on people when I am so excited to see them and to be with them.

When I first arrived at my foster home, loud noises or abrupt movements would startle me.  Now, I just roll with the flow mostly.  I still get very anxious during storms. I am almost house trained but can have accidents when I get really scared. I spent a lot of time in an outside kennel in my previous life and am learning to do my business on the grass and not the on floor or the sidewalk. If I am by myself, I need something to occupy my time such as a chew toy.  Don’t leave undergarments lying around or you might find them in shreds. My foster family has exposed me to water (not interested at this point) and guns - was really scared. So my potential to be a hunting/retriever is not looking good. But I do love life!

July 2018 Update, by Lynn Hodges

Luca is doing great! He still has his quirky personality, but has settled right in to his new home and family.  He has learned to retrieve the daily newspaper from our driveway, and he loves to visit our next-door neighbor and her 3 dogs (German Shepard, Beagle, and another mixed small dog). He developed an ear infection this spring which turned out to be an allergy to some dog foods. He is on a prescription dog food right now, but has clear ears (yay!).

July 2019 Update!

Luca received your card in the mail today, and we observed his gotcha day yesterday on July 10 (We are all one syllable names here, so we shortened his name)!  Luke is doing great.  We are in the process tackling some digestive issues with proteins, but we have a fabulous vet, who we LOVE, and she is working with us to find the right dog food to eat.  He loves to run in the front yard and chase crickets!  I will send you some pics from my phone, but wanted to get this note off right away.  He is not a very good poser when it comes to photos, though!  Thanks for the card and we are so thankful for our Luke!  He brings a lot of joy to us and our family!
