BSR Alum "Rosie" by Amy Hall
Rosie was listed as "free" on the Internet and Boykin Spaniel Rescue quickly made arrangements to come to her rescue. Rosie was living in an old dog pen and was a sick girl the day the volunteers arrived; it was really hot and she had been sick for a while. The pen did not have a gate so one of the volunteers had to enlist a bucket to stand on in order to crawl over the fence to help her out. Rosie was happy but embarrassed to get into the truck with them. She smelled so bad they rode 60 plus miles back home with the windows down (but the volunteer's Boykin, Led, enjoyed it because he likes to feel the breeze).
After arriving at her new home, her foster parents gave Rosie what might have been her first bath, good food, and clean water. They did not realize how sick she really was until after dinner and then they knew! The next morning Rosie was taken to the veterinarian who determined she had a bacterial infection. In the meantime, the volunteer spoke to the executive director of BSR and told her about the living conditions of two other Boykins that had been left behind in the pen, and that they were for sale. (Rosie was free because she only had three legs.) Boykin Rescue made it possible for the volunteers to return to rescue them too. Kate and Abby were also brought into the rescue and received medical attention and TLC.
After only a week, the medicine for Rosie's infection went to work and she was brought up to date on vaccinations and spayed. She has learned how to chase a ball and makes her foster mom giggle with joy when she brings it back to her. Rosie also loves to swim and at first her foster mom sat anxiously by the pool. After all, a dog with three legs might have a hard time swimming, but Rosie showed her that, even with three legs, there is nothing she can't do. Now Rosie claims a spot in the bed right between her new Mom and Dad, who decided to make her a permanent part of their family. They could not think of giving up their "special girl". Rosie adores Led who tolerates her ear pulling and constant following. Sometimes he even plays hide and seek and prays she doesn't find him. Rosie's rescuers send out special thanks to all the great people who donate to BSR. Because of their generosity, Rosie and her former pen mates have been given the opportunity to have wonderful lives.
