Oats was an EXTREMELY energetic young pup with a high prey drive, who had left a trail of avian carnage across the farm where his exasperated owners lived. Recognizing that the "birdiness" Oats displayed would be better channeled into hunting and retrieving, BSR asked a local volunteer to work with Oats and determine his potential as a hunting Boykin. Oats aced the test, and his foster continued to work with him and develop his instinctive abilities. Since Oats was on the high end of the Boykin energy scale and absolutely needed continued training and as much time in the field working as he could get, he was adopted to his foster family as a "special needs placement" to ensure he would live his most fulfilled life hunting and bringing back the birds he was supposed to get!
Update: Thanks so much for the “Happy Gotcha Day!” card! Not only did I just turn 3-years-old, it’s been an amazing 2 years here. Everyone says I’ve really matured, but I’m still OATS! I love to play with everyone, two or four legged! As you can see, Dad and I had a fantastic season last fall and winter, hunting and retrieving quail, snipe, and pheasant. Summer in west central Florida is HOT! So, I’ve been playing in the pool and staying safe in the sun, but I can’t wait for the fall. Thanks for talking my Dad into getting me; I don’t think he knew how much we all belonged together! Till next time, love and niggles to everyone!
