Dear Friends-
It is hard to believe 2023 is coming to a close! It has been an incredibly busy year for BSR with barely time to regroup between intakes. The pace has been relentless (in several cases 6 or more dogs at once) and BSR has seen month after month of double-digit intakes. At the time of this writing, we have taken in 133 dogs—a 22% increase over the entire year’s number for 2022—and are on pace to take in 150 rescues this year! Not only has the rate of intakes increased but the types of cases we call “catastrophic” in terms of severity and cost of care continues to grow with 29 catastrophic cases so far this year. As always, our faithful volunteers and supporters like yourself have helped us rise to the occasion over and over again. Yet there is no way around it, more dogs and more catastrophic cases equate to higher fundraising needs. So, I come to you as I do each year to humbly ask for your help as we are seeking to raise $150,000 through the end of 2023 so that we can keep pace with the work to be done.
Every year brings more intakes and the reasons why remain the same: rising costs of veterinary care; owners’ life circumstances change and they can no longer meet the needs of the dogs; the dogs’ medical needs are financially or physically more than their owners can afford. And every year we take in more dogs with spinal disc ruptures and orthopedic issues requiring advanced diagnostics, surgeries, and rehabilitation; more congenital deformities; more extreme allergy cases requiring specialists; more seizure cases; more cases requiring professional training; and more puppy litters (way more!) While in the past we have gone years with no puppies, this year we were surprised by 2 litters of puppies from dogs that we did not know were pregnant on intake and 1 litter by a pregnant stray that came in from a shelter. Twenty-one puppies, each needing to stay in care through spay/neuters at 6-10 months of age puts a huge strain on our resources. These cases with our adoptable dog intakes are just one side of BSR as we continue to carry between 25-29 rescues in Permanent Foster Care program.
Unfortunately, we do not see this trend of intakes slowing down, and we have built the operational infrastructure to support the need. With our incredible volunteers who step up at a moment's notice; the stead-fast, gracious support of our donors; and the Boykin Nation’s continual support for the most vulnerable, each and every dog continues to receive all the care necessary to ensure a good quality of life and a second chance.
